Definition
A Lowland Scot is a person from the Lowlands of Scotland. This region is generally the flatter, southern part of the country, in contrast to the Highlands. Historically, Lowland Scots have had a distinct culture, influenced by proximity to England and greater agricultural activity. They often spoke Scots, a Germanic language distinct from Scottish Gaelic. Think of them as the more anglicized Scots, compared to their Highland cousins. Their history is filled with border conflicts and cultural exchange.
