"Ludi saeculares" (Latin for "secular games") were ancient Roman religious celebrations held once every saeculum (a length of time variously calculated, but typically around 100–110 years). They were meant to mark the start of a new era and ensure Rome's continued prosperity. Think of them as a super-sized, once-in-a-lifetime festival meant to renew the entire state. Unlike annual festivals, these were rare, momentous occasions. They combined religious rituals, theatrical performances, and athletic competitions.
