A "marriage licence" (alternate spelling of "marriage license") is an official document issued by a government authority granting permission for two individuals to marry. It's basically the government's way of saying, "Okay, you're clear to wed!" 📜 It validates that the couple meets the state's legal requirements to get married. Typically these include age, freedom to marry (i.e., not already married), and absence of close blood relation. It gives the marriage official legal recognition.
