Metrazol shock therapy, now largely obsolete, was a psychiatric treatment where the drug Metrazol (pentylenetetrazol) was used to induce seizures. It was believed to alleviate symptoms of mental illnesses, particularly schizophrenia. Imagine triggering a reset button on a faulty computer; that was the basic idea. However, the seizures were often violent and unpredictable, leading to fractures and other injuries. Metrazol shock was eventually replaced by safer alternatives, like electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). It's a stark reminder of how medical treatments evolve.
