Definition

A narwhal is a medium-sized toothed whale known for the long tusk that protrudes from its head, mainly found in Arctic waters. Think of it as the unicorn of the sea 🦄, but way cooler because it actually exists! The 'tusk' is actually an elongated canine tooth, not a horn. Male narwhals usually have the most prominent tusks. Narwhals are social creatures and live in pods. Their diet mainly consists of fish, shrimp, and squid. They navigate using echolocation, bouncing sound waves off objects.

Etymology

The word 'narwhal' comes from the Old Norse word 'nár,' meaning 'corpse.' This might seem a bit morbid, but it refers to the whale's mottled grey color, which resembles a drowned person. 💀 The 'whal' part is straightforwardly from the Old English 'hwæl,' meaning 'whale.' So, essentially, it’s the 'corpse whale.' The Norse were pretty descriptive, weren’t they? Over time, 'nárhvalr' evolved into the modern 'narwhal.'
