Definition
Nasality is the quality of speech sounds being produced through the nose. It happens when air escapes through the nasal cavity during speech, adding a nasal resonance to the sounds. Think of how your voice sounds when you have a cold and your nose is stuffed up; that's nasality! Some degree of nasality is normal in certain sounds ('m,' 'n,' 'ng'), but excessive nasality can affect speech clarity. Too much nasality can make speech sound muffled or distorted. Speech therapists work to correct excessive nasality.
