The North Atlantic is the northern part of the Atlantic Ocean. It stretches from the equator to the Arctic Ocean. It's known for its stormy weather, especially during winter. The Gulf Stream, a warm current, significantly influences its climate. It's a major shipping route between North America and Europe. The North Atlantic also plays a vital role in global climate patterns.
'North' comes from the Proto-Indo-European root *ner- (left, below), because when facing east, north is to the left. 'Atlantic' comes from the Greek word 'Atlantikos,' meaning 'Sea of Atlas,' referring to the mythical Atlas who held up the heavens. Together, 'North Atlantic' simply means the northern portion of the Sea of Atlas.
