Definition
The nucellus is the central part of an ovule, containing the embryo sac. πΏ Think of it as the nourishing tissue within the ovule. It's the main body of the ovule where the megaspores (precursors to the embryo sac) develop. It provides nutrients to the developing embryo sac and, eventually, the embryo itself. After fertilization, the nucellus may be consumed by the developing embryo. Or, it may persist as a nutritive tissue called the perisperm. π Itβs essential for proper seed development.
