Definition
An 'ommatidium' (plural: ommatidia) is one of the individual light-sensing units that make up a compound eye. Think of it as a single pixel in a digital image, but for an insect's eye. Each ommatidium has its own lens, photoreceptor cells, and other structures to detect light. Together, all the ommatidia create a mosaic-like image of the world. The more ommatidia an insect has, the more detailed its vision will be. It's the fundamental building block of a compound eye, essential for the insect's ability to see.
