Definition
A palankeen is an alternative spelling of "palanquin," referring to a covered litter carried on poles by several people. It's essentially a fancy mobile seat. Like palanquins, palankeens were historically used to transport people of high status, such as royalty or nobles. They were a symbol of wealth and social prestige, particularly in Asia. Palankeens provided a comfortable and private mode of transportation, shielding occupants from the elements and the gaze of the public. Itβs simply another way to spell and refer to the same luxurious device.
