Definition
*Persea borbonia*, commonly known as red bay, is an evergreen tree native to the southeastern United States. It thrives in moist, coastal habitats, like swamps and maritime forests. The leaves are lance-shaped and emit a spicy aroma when crushed. Historically, they were used as a culinary spice and in traditional medicine. Red bay trees provide important habitat for various wildlife species. Unfortunately, this tree is highly susceptible to laurel wilt disease, which has caused significant mortality. Conservation efforts aim to preserve this ecologically valuable species.
