Definition
A pile dwelling is a structure built on stilts or piles over water or wetlands. Imagine houses raised above the ground like treehouses, but over water! These dwellings were common in prehistoric times and offered protection from floods, pests, and enemies. They represent an ingenious way our ancestors adapted to their environments. Think of them as the OG waterfront property. They were particularly common around lakes and coastlines, sort of like Venice, Italy, but way older and simpler.
