Definition
A pinnace is a small, light sailing ship, often used as a tender or auxiliary vessel by larger ships, particularly during the Age of Sail. It served various purposes, including reconnaissance, transportation of personnel, and carrying supplies between ship and shore. Think of it as the ship's smaller, more versatile sidekick. Pinnaces were essential for communication and logistics in an era when large ships couldn't easily navigate shallow waters or approach coastlines. They were the maritime equivalent of a pickup truck.
