Definition
A pitsaw is a large saw, typically two-handled, used for sawing wood in a saw pit. It’s operated by two sawyers, one standing above the log and the other below, in a pit. Think of it as an early form of a sawmill. 🌲 The upper sawyer guides the saw, while the lower sawyer pulls it downward. This method was common before the advent of mechanized sawmills. Using a pitsaw was a laborious and skilled task. Pitsaws represent a significant part of the history of woodworking.
