A PKU test, or phenylketonuria test, screens newborns for a rare genetic disorder. PKU prevents the body from breaking down phenylalanine, an amino acid. Untreated, PKU leads to intellectual disabilities and other health problems. The test involves a simple blood sample taken from the baby's heel. It's usually done within the first few days of life. It is vital for early detection and intervention. Think of it as a preemptive health check.
