Poliosis is the medical term for the localized absence of melanin in hair, resulting in a patch of white or gray hair. Unlike general graying that comes with age, poliosis typically affects a specific area of the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or other hairy parts of the body. Think of it as a 'highlight' that isn't intentional. It can be caused by genetics, autoimmune disorders, or even trauma. Imagine a dog with a random white patch of fur; that's similar to poliosis in humans.
