A ratlin (also spelled ratline) is essentially a rung on a rope ladder, specifically on sailing ships. It's one of the small ropes fastened horizontally to the shrouds, allowing sailors to climb the rigging. Think of it as the step on a rope ladder that gets you closer to the top of a pirate ship's mast π΄ββ οΈ. Ratlins make accessing the sails for adjustments and repairs much easier. They're spaced closely together to provide secure footing. Without them, sailors would find it nearly impossible to work aloft.
