Definition

A recessive allele is an allele that only expresses its phenotype when an individual has two copies of it. Think of it as the "shy" allele that only speaks up when it's with a similar allele. If a dominant allele is present, the recessive allele's trait will be masked. For example, the allele for blue eyes is recessive. You'll only have blue eyes if you inherit a blue-eye allele from both parents. Recessive alleles can still be passed down through generations, even if they aren't expressed. They can create surprises later on!

Etymology

The concept of recessive alleles also stems from Gregor Mendel's experiments. He observed that some traits seemed to disappear in the first generation of offspring but reappeared in the second generation. He concluded that these traits were controlled by recessive factors. The term 'recessive' describes the way these alleles are 'hidden' when paired with a dominant allele.

Examples

  • "Blue eyes are a recessive trait."
  • "A person must inherit two copies of the recessive allele to express the trait."
  • "Carriers of a recessive allele don't show the trait but can pass it on."
  • "Recessive alleles can sometimes lead to genetic disorders."

Anecdote / Story

Imagine in 'X-Men,' some mutant abilities are only expressed if a person has two copies of a specific gene. For example, if the ability to teleport is recessive, only those with two teleportation alleles will be able to teleport. If they only have one, they might carry the gene but not show the ability. The recessive allele waits for the right pairing to express itself!
