Richard Strauss (1864-1949) was a German composer known for his operas, tone poems, and lieder (German art songs). His music is characterized by rich orchestration, dramatic intensity, and soaring melodies. Think of him as the ultimate soundtrack composer for a really epic movie, but before movies existed. His works, such as 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' (used in '2001: A Space Odyssey') and 'Salome,' are famous for their grandeur and emotional power. He pushed the boundaries of late Romantic music.
