The "rima vestibuli" is the space between the vestibular folds (false vocal cords) in the larynx. It is located superior to the rima glottidis (true vocal cords). Unlike the true vocal cords, the vestibular folds don't usually vibrate to produce sound. They mainly protect the true vocal cords. Think of them as a safety curtain above the main vocal stage. They help to prevent foreign objects from entering the lower respiratory tract.
