Definition
Sand grouse is an alternate spelling of sandgrouse. These birds belong to the family Pteroclididae and inhabit arid and semi-arid regions of Africa and Asia. They're famous for their remarkable adaptations to desert life, including the ability of some species to transport water to their chicks using their specialized belly feathers. They resemble a cross between pigeons and partridges, and nest on the ground. Think of them as the ultimate desert survivors.
