A sarcocystidean refers to a member of the Sarcocystidae family, a group of parasitic protozoa that form cysts in the muscle tissue of animals. These parasites have a two-host life cycle involving a prey animal (intermediate host) and a predator (definitive host). Think of sarcocystideans as microscopic travelers that need two different 'vehicles' (hosts) to complete their journey. The infection is often asymptomatic in the intermediate host, but can cause illness in the definitive host if they consume infected tissue. Cooking meat thoroughly can kill these parasites.
