A 'sarcocystieian' is a less common, alternative spelling for 'sarcocystidean,' referring to a member of the Sarcocystidae family. These parasitic protozoa form cysts within the muscle tissue of animals, having a two-host life cycle. Think of a sarcocystieian as a hidden passenger on a multi-stage journey, needing two different hosts. The infection may be unnoticed in the prey animal but can cause illness in the predator that eats the infected meat. Thoroughly cooking meat helps to eliminate these parasites and prevent infection.
