Definition
Sarcosporidia (now known as Sarcocystidae) are parasitic protozoa that form cysts in the muscles of animals, including livestock and wildlife. These parasites have a complex life cycle involving two hosts: a prey animal and a predator. Think of Sarcosporidia as microscopic squatters that build tiny 'apartments' (cysts) inside muscle tissue. The infection often goes unnoticed in the prey animal but can cause illness in the predator if they consume infected meat. Understanding the life cycle is crucial for preventing the spread of these parasites.
