Definition
A sarcosporidian (belonging to the Sarcocystidae family) is a parasitic protozoan that forms cysts in the muscle tissue of animals, including livestock and wildlife. These parasites have a two-host life cycle, involving both a prey animal and a predator. Picture a sarcosporidian as a microscopic tenant setting up shop in a muscle cell. The infection is often asymptomatic in the prey but can cause illness in the predator that consumes the infected tissue. Cooking meat thoroughly helps eliminate these parasites.
