Definition

Saurischia is one of the two major groups of dinosaurs. 🦖 It is defined by their lizard-like hip structure. This group includes both carnivorous and herbivorous dinosaurs. The other major group is Ornithischia (bird-hipped dinosaurs). Interestingly, birds evolved from saurischian dinosaurs. So, these 'lizard-hipped' dinosaurs are actually more closely related to birds than the 'bird-hipped' dinosaurs are. Saurischia contains some of the largest terrestrial animals ever to live.

Etymology

The name 'Saurischia' comes from the Greek words 'sauros' (σαῦρος) meaning lizard, and 'ischion' (ἰσχίον) referring to the hip joint. Therefore, 'Saurischia' literally means 'lizard-hipped'. This refers to the ancestral hip structure retained by this group of dinosaurs. It highlights the distinctive pelvic configuration observed in these dinosaurs. The term was coined by Harry Seeley in 1888 to classify dinosaurs based on their hip structure.

You might even reference Jurassic Park, pointing out that although Velociraptors look bird-like, their skeletal structure links them to Saurischia, highlighting the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds. It's all about the hips!
