Definition
A scalawag is a term with historical and often political connotations, referring to a white Southerner who supported Reconstruction after the American Civil War. It's generally used negatively to describe someone seen as a traitor to the Southern cause. Beyond the historical context, it can also be used more broadly to describe a rascal or scoundrel. However, it always carries a hint of its historical baggage. It's not simply about mischief, but about perceived disloyalty or betrayal. It's a term loaded with historical weight.
