Definition
"Shire town" is an older term, mostly used in Britain, referring to the chief town of a shire (county). This is where the county's administrative and judicial functions are centered. Think of it as the historic equivalent of a county seat.ποΈ The term is less common now, often replaced by "county town" or simply the name of the town. Unlike a capital city governing a whole country, a shire town only governs the shire.
