A 'soft scale' is a type of scale insect belonging to the family Coccidae. ๐ก๏ธ Unlike armored scales, soft scales lack a hard, detachable covering. Instead, they are protected by a soft, waxy layer that is part of their body. These insects feed on plant sap, weakening the plant and reducing its growth. They also excrete honeydew, a sugary substance that attracts ants and promotes sooty mold. Soft scale infestations can be managed with horticultural oils, insecticidal soaps, or biological controls. Think of them as the less-armored, more vulnerable relatives of other scale insects.
