Definition
A spherocyte is a red blood cell that is spherical (round) in shape, rather than the normal biconcave disc shape. They lack the central pallor (central light area) seen in normal red blood cells. Spherocytes are often smaller and more fragile than normal red blood cells. They are commonly found in hereditary spherocytosis, an inherited disorder affecting the red blood cell membrane. These cells are more susceptible to destruction in the spleen. Think of them as tiny 'balls' instead of flattened discs. Their shape impairs their flexibility.
