Definition
A spongefly is an insect whose larvae feed exclusively on freshwater sponges. These insects are found near bodies of water where sponges grow. The larvae have specialized mouthparts that allow them to pierce and consume sponge tissue. Adult spongeflies are less frequently observed than their larvae. Spongeflies play a unique role in aquatic ecosystems by controlling sponge populations. They represent a specialized niche in the environment. They are a part of the biodiversity.
