Definition
A "superfund site" is a contaminated location in the United States identified by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) as requiring long-term cleanup of hazardous waste. These sites pose a significant threat to human health and the environment. The Superfund program, officially known as CERCLA (Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act), provides funding and legal authority to clean up these sites. Superfund sites often involve abandoned industrial facilities, landfills, or mining operations. The cleanup process can be complex, expensive, and time-consuming.
