Definition
*Taxus brevifolia*, or the western yew, is a species celebrated for its medicinal properties. It is the source of paclitaxel, an essential chemotherapy drug. It is found primarily in old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Unlike many conifers, it produces a red, fleshy structure called an aril instead of a cone, though the seed within is toxic. Think of it as a natural treasure chest with a lock. It's a slow-growing, shade-tolerant tree.
