Ted Shawn (1891-1972) was a pioneering American male dancer and choreographer. He helped elevate male dance at a time when it wasn't widely accepted. He founded the dance company, Denishawn, with his wife Ruth St. Denis. Shawn was also instrumental in establishing Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. He sought to legitimize male dance through athleticism and artistry. Think of him as a key player in breaking down gender norms in dance.
