Definition
A tenant farmer is someone who farms land owned by another person and pays rent, either in cash or a share of the crops. They are not the landowners but cultivate the land and manage the farming operations. Unlike farm laborers, tenant farmers have more autonomy and responsibility. They make decisions about planting, harvesting, and selling the crops. The arrangement can provide access to land for those who cannot afford to buy it. It also allows landowners to have their land farmed without directly managing the operations.
