"Thanatos" is a Greek word referring to the personification of death, and in psychoanalytic theory, it represents the "death drive" or "death instinct." It's the innate human drive toward destruction, aggression, and ultimately, a return to a state of non-existence. Thanatos is often contrasted with "Eros," the life instinct, which drives survival, reproduction, and creativity. It's not necessarily a conscious desire for death but rather an unconscious force. Think of it as the urge to break things down, opposite of building things up.
