Tinea refers to a fungal infection of the skin, hair, or nails. It's caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. The infection often results in a circular, ring-like rash, hence the common name "ringworm" (even though worms aren't involved!). Different types of tinea are named based on the body part affected, such as tinea pedis (athlete's foot) or tinea capitis (scalp ringworm). Think of it as the unwanted guest at the skin party.
