Tipulidae is the scientific name for the crane fly family, those long-legged, gangly insects often mistaken for giant mosquitoes 🦟. However, they are not mosquitoes, and they don't bite! Their larvae, known as leatherjackets, live in soil and feed on roots and decaying matter. Adult crane flies are often clumsy fliers. Think of them as the awkward teenagers of the insect world. They are harmless to humans.
