Definition
A topmast is a section of a ship's mast, specifically the one immediately above the lower mast. Imagine it as a second story on a tall, vertical pole. It supports sails higher up, allowing the ship to catch more wind. Think of it like adding an extension to a fishing rod for a longer cast. The topmast increases sail area and thus the ship's speed. Ships with multiple masts often have topmasts on each one.
