Definition
Trombiculidae is a family of mites, commonly known as chiggers or harvest mites, whose larval stage is parasitic on vertebrates, including humans. These mites are notorious for causing intense itching and skin irritation. They're the tiny troublemakers of the mite world 😠. Trombiculidae larvae attach to the skin and feed on skin cells, causing a characteristic red welt. Think of them as the annoying mosquitos of the mite world, but much smaller. Only the larval stage is parasitic; the nymph and adult stages are free-living.
