Definition
A 'Uniate Church,' also called an 'Eastern Catholic Church,' refers to Eastern Christian churches that were formerly part of the Eastern Orthodox or Oriental Orthodox traditions but have since entered into communion with the Roman Catholic Church while retaining their distinctive liturgical practices and theological traditions. They acknowledge the Pope as their leader but maintain Eastern rituals and customs. Think of them as a bridge between Eastern Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism. They represent attempts at reconciliation and unity between different Christian traditions. These churches use different languages and have unique cultural expressions.
