Definition
'Uvular' refers to sounds produced using the uvula, the fleshy appendage that hangs down at the back of your throat. Certain languages, like French and German, use uvular sounds extensively. The 'r' sound in Parisian French is often an uvular trill. Most English speakers do not use uvular sounds regularly. The uvula vibrates or constricts to create these sounds. It is a relatively uncommon articulation in many languages. These sounds are often confused with guttural sounds.
