Definition
A vegetative cell is a cell that is actively growing and dividing, as opposed to a spore or dormant cell. This term is most often used in the context of bacteria and fungi. It refers to the cell in its normal, active state of metabolism and reproduction. Vegetative cells are responsible for nutrient uptake, growth, and binary fission (in bacteria). When conditions become unfavorable, some bacteria can form spores, which are dormant and resistant. Think of it as the "on" state versus the "off" state of a bacterial or fungal cell.
