Definition
The vertebral arch, synonymous with neural arch, is the bony arch forming the posterior portion of a vertebra, safeguarding the spinal cord. Envision it as a protective shield for the delicate spinal cord. It completes the vertebral foramen, the hole through which the spinal cord passes. Without the vertebral arch, the spinal cord would be unprotected and susceptible to damage. Humans and other vertebrates rely on the vertebral arch for neurological protection.
