Definition
A Vestal Virgin was a priestess of Vesta, the Roman goddess of the hearth, home, and family. Chosen as young girls, they served for 30 years, maintaining the sacred fire of Rome. The fire symbolized Rome's safety and continuity. Losing it meant disaster for the state. Vestal Virgins were highly honored and enjoyed unique privileges. They were free from usual societal expectations, akin to a powerful nun figure in modern context.
