A villein was a feudal tenant entirely subject to a lord or attached to the manor. 🧑🌾 They were not quite slaves, but their freedom was heavily restricted. Think of them as being stuck in a game where you can only follow the storyline with no side quests. They couldn't leave the manor without the lord's permission. They owed labor and services to the lord. Villeins had some rights, unlike slaves, but very few. This system was common in medieval Europe. It's similar to having a really controlling boss at work. It was a key part of feudal society.
