A whipping boy was a historical figure, typically a young boy raised alongside a prince or noble. The whipping boy would be punished for the prince's misdeeds. The idea was that the prince would learn from the punishment vicariously, as directly punishing the heir was often forbidden. It seems like an antiquated and unfair system; the whipping boy was essentially a scapegoat by design. Imagine a real-life example of 'The Prince and the Pauper', except one kid gets all the spankings.
