Definition
A "wood widgeon" typically refers to the American wood duck, a strikingly beautiful waterfowl. These ducks are known for their vibrant iridescent plumage and crested head. Unlike typical ducks that prefer open water, wood ducks favor wooded swamps and ponds. They nest in tree cavities, a behavior somewhat unusual for ducks. Think of them as the supermodels of the duck world, more at home in a forest runway than a vast lake. Their diet mainly consists of seeds, nuts, and aquatic insects. Wood widgeons are relatively shy and easily startled.
