"Works" can refer to a place where industrial labor is carried on; a factory or plant. This is usually plural, as in "steel works." Alternatively, it can mean the moving parts of a mechanism or device. "How do the innards/works look?" When a plan 'works', it is effective. Unlike 'work' (effort), 'works' is a facility or inner mechanics. So, in mechanics or industry, 'works' references physical infrastructure, and in verb form 'to work' it means to function effectively. It is useful to know the difference. 🤔
