Definition

Xeroradiography is an older imaging technique that combines xerography and radiography to create X-ray images. It uses a dry process instead of traditional wet chemical processing. 📸 An electrically charged plate is exposed to X-rays, and then toner is used to develop the image. This technique was once commonly used for mammography but has largely been replaced by digital imaging. Xeroradiography offered better contrast than traditional X-rays. Dry processing was advantageous. Modern techniques are now more prevalent.

Etymology

The word "xeroradiography" combines "xero-", "radio-", and "-graphy." As previously discussed, “xero-" comes from the Greek word "xēros" (ξηρός), meaning "dry.” "Radio-" refers to radiation (X-rays). "-graphy," comes from the Greek "graphō" (γράφω), meaning "to write" or "to draw." Therefore, xeroradiography literally means "dry writing with radiation." The name describes the technique.
